Cyprus: Cyprus increased its medal tally to eight at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday after winning three medals in judo, marking the country's best-ever performance in the sport at the Games.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) announced that George Balarjishvili secured the silver medal and Petros Christodoulides claimed the bronze in the men's under-66kg event, while Sofia Asvesta won the silver medal in the women's under-52kg category.
Balarjishvili and Christodoulides faced each other in the semi-finals, guaranteeing Cyprus a place in the final, while on the next tatami Asvesta booked a place in the medal matches, in what the COC described as a historic moment for the Cyprus Commonwealth Games Association.
The three medals lifted Cyprus' overall tally at the Games to eight, comprising five silver and three bronze medals.
Cyprus also recorded a positive result in athletics, with Filippa Fotopoulou qualifying for the women's long jump final.
