Cyprus a Valued Partner of the US, Rubio Says on Independence Anniversary

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus is recognized as a valued partner of the United States, according to State Secretary Marco Rubio. In a written statement, Rubio extended his congratulations to the people of Cyprus on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Republic’s independence.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Rubio highlighted the United States’ commitment to a Cypriot-led, UN-facilitated comprehensive settlement aimed at reunifying the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality for all Cypriots. He emphasized that the bilateral collaboration between the two nations promotes increased commercial trade, combats illicit financial flows, and strengthens regional security, providing prosperity for citizens of both countries.

Rubio expressed gratitude for the Republic of Cyprus’s assistance in ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens in crisis zones, which he identified as one of the highest priorities for his country. He reiterated the commitment to support efforts for a comprehensive settlement to reunify Cyprus.

The division of Cyprus dates back to 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive, with the most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ending without progress. Recently, the United Nations Secretary-General met with Cypriot President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in New York City. Another informal meeting on Cyprus is anticipated in November, following earlier meetings this year in Geneva and New York. Maria Angela Holguin, the UN’s personal envoy, is expected to visit Cyprus in the coming weeks to prepare for the upcoming meeting.
