Andorra: The Cypriot swimmer Kalia Antoniou secured the Gold medal at the Games of the Small States of Europe, adding another one medal to the collection of the Cyprus delegation to the Games.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus leads the medal standings with a total of 33 medals, including 12 gold, 9 silver, and 12 bronze. Cyprus also tops the overall medal table.
Reporting from Andorra, journalist Theodoros Kombos of the Cyprus Sports Writers Association, Antoniou once again proved why she is considered one of Cyprus’ top athletes, securing another gold in the women’s 100m freestyle.
Cyprus’ success in the sport of swimming didn’t stop there. Agathi Manoli earned a bronze medal in the women’s 200m butterfly, while the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team secured the silver with a time of 3:56.66.
In other swimming events, Antonios Nikolaou finished 6th in the men’s 200m backstroke with a time of 2:11.97. The men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team also came in 6th, clocking in at 3:32.45.
In women’s gymnastics, the Cypriot team secured a 4th-place finish in the team event with a combined score of 129.450. In the individual all-around, Evangelina Dimitriou placed 6th (44.900 points), followed by Eleana Panayiotou in 10th (43.050). Georgia Charalambous finished 17th (31.350), Eva Dionysiou 18th (31.300), and Kalyps³ Papaioannou 23rd (16.650).
Cyprus men’s 3×3 basketball team beat Malta with 21-15. That game was followed by a 21-14 victory against host nation Andorra, and a second win over Malta with 21-16. In their fourth and final game of the day, Cyprus narrowly lost to Andorra 15-13. Despite the defeat, Cyprus finished top of the group and advanced to the final of the sport on May 28, where they will battle for gold against either Malta or Andorra.
The women’s 3×3 team lost by Malta with a score of 21-11. However, they bounced back with two consecutive wins: 21-18 over Monaco and 19-9 against Andorra. In their final game of the day, the team lost by Luxembourg, with 21-5.
In the final group standings Cyprus secured the third place and as a result the team will face Malta in the semifinals, fighting for a spot in the gold medal match.
