Cypriot official stresses role of trade policy for the EU Economic Security

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Marios Panayides, has stressed the important role of trade policy and international partnerships in strengthening the EU’s Economic Security. The Cypriot official represented Cyprus in the EU Informal Foreign Affairs Council, that was held in Valencia, Spain,and was composed of Trade Ministers. According to an official press release, discussions focused on the trade aspects of the recently announced Strategy for Economic Security. In his intervention, the Cypriot official emphasized the important role of trade policy and international partnerships in strengthening the EU’s Economic Security and the need to continue trade negotiations with partners who share the same concerns and interests. Regarding issues of special Cypriot interest, he stressed the importance of opening the Indian market in the agri-food sector. Referring to the services sector, he praised the importance of ambitious provisions in shipping services. Furthermore, he underlined the need for a high degree of protection of flagship EU Geographical Indications.
