Cypriot MP takes part in UN meeting for counter-terrorism

Cypriot Member of the House of Representatives Rita Superman participated on Wednesday in the 5th Coordination Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies organized in Istanbul by the UN Office for Counter Terrorism.

The Cypriot MP took part in the meeting in her capacity as the Special Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the fight against terrorism and organized crime.

According to a press release by the House of Representatives, in her intervention, Superman referred to the alarming increase of terrorist organizations, pointing out that the networks of these organizations are spreading dangerously throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, while their upgraded organizational capabilities are increasing dramatically the number of victims and international instability and insecurity.

The Cypriot MP also referred to the constant change in the manifestations of the terrorist threat and the strengthening of terrorist organizations, which, as she pointed out, use advanced methods of action and re
cruitment, utilizing modern technologies, including the Internet and artificial intelligence. As a result, she added, countries are constantly faced with new challenges in terms of their counter-terrorism policies.

The Special Rapporteur announced the Organization’s decision to create a Permanent Parliamentary Observatory in San Marino to monitor the malicious use of artificial intelligence. The goal of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, she said, is that through cooperation with the UN and other international bodies, the Observatory becomes a point of reference for parliamentarians around the world.

On Thursday 9 May, the Cypriot MP will take part in the 3rd Parliamentary Strategy Dialogue on Counter-Terrorism, organized by the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism.
