Cypriot MEPs Loucas Fourlas and Costas Mavrides criticised on Wednesday the EU’s stance regarding the developments in Nagorno-Karabakh, during a discussion in the Plenary session of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg. DISY and EPP MEP Loucas Fourlas, in his intervention, denounced ‘the apathy’ with which the EU is dealing with the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh, according to a press release. He said that the ethnic cleansing continues, while the international community was watching and condemning without doing anything. It is clear that the Azeri natural gas, as a value, was above human lives, European principles while it determines the EU’s political agenda, he said, according to the press release. He emphasized that the situation was ‘tragic’ and that the EU’s substantive intervention was urgently needed. DIKO – S and D MEP, Costas Mavrides, said that they are asking for the cancellation of the natural gas import agreement from Azerbaijan, according to another press release from his office. He referred to the ‘criminal regimes’ of Azerbaijan and Turkey and to passive complicity by the Russian President, noting that condemnations and appeals do not reason with such regimes. Mavrides called for a geopolitical role for the EU and a fairer and more ethical EU including its institutions, it said.
