Cypriot MEP to Host Conference on Greek Cypriot Property Appropriation

Strasbourg:Cypriot MEP Costas Mavrides is set to organize a conference at the European Parliament on December 2, focusing on the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction over the transfer of settlers to Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus and the appropriation of Greek Cypriot properties.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Mavrides spoke to Cypriot journalists in Strasbourg, stating that international legal experts will discuss alleged crimes in these occupied areas and the potential for prosecution before the ICC. He previously submitted a detailed document to the Court, urging criminal proceedings against those involved in settlement activities and the organized appropriation of Greek Cypriot properties.

He highlighted evidence such as electoral records in the occupied areas, infrastructure projects funded by Turkey, and the widespread exploitation of Greek Cypriot properties.

In a related matter, Mavrides addressed the EU's 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), pointing out the differences between Parliament and member states regarding the size of the next long-term budget. Parliament seeks approximately 10% more funding than the European Commission's proposal, contrasting with the Irish Presidency's suggestion of a 2% increase. He emphasized the need for financial resources for defense, competitiveness, and established EU programs, which would impact Cyprus's funding for regional development, agriculture, defense, infrastructure, housing, and the green transition.

Furthermore, Mavrides supported a common EU minimum age for social media access and called for mandatory changes to online platforms' algorithms to better protect children. He referred to the proposed EU KIDS Act, stressing the importance of preventive action against risks such as addiction and online manipulation, and opposed allowing parents or guardians to individually adjust age restrictions, as it could leave children vulnerable to pressure.
