Dimitris Hadjipavlou, a Cypriot police expert, has been appointed as a Frontex special expert on returns, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a written statement.
Hadjipavlou will begin working in Frontex’s European Centre for Returns (ECR) next month.
Letymbiotis said that Frontex’s decision to select a Cypriot expert among a large number of candidates by other member-states ‘manifests the high professional level in Cyprus concerning migration, especially after the implementation of the policy of Christodoulides’ government.’
The Spokesman recalled that Cyprus ranks first among the EU member states in the number of returns of third-country nationals which have no legal right to stay in Cyprus, a result of the “successful implementation of the government’s policy on migration and especially in the field of returns.”
He also added that the appointment of Dimitris Hadjipavlou in Frontex’ ECR will contribute to the management of returns on an EU level and constitutes another step towards t
he more effective handling of migration.
‘The Cypriot government’s targeted actions towards the effective management of migration, that is considered a joint European problem, led to Cyprus’ participation in EU decision-making and EU strategy on the level of Frontex via the selection of a Cypriot expert, which assumes duties in March 2024,’ Letymbiotis concluded.
