Cryptosporidium Parasite Detected in 40% of Calves in Cyprus

Nicosia: Scientists from the University of Nicosia, in collaboration with an international research team, have identified the Cryptosporidium (Cryptosporidium parvum) parasite in nearly 40% of calves tested across Cyprus. This pathogen is known for its potential to be transmitted from animals to humans, causing diarrhoea, which poses a threat particularly to vulnerable groups.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the collaborative study was conducted by Dr Daphne Mavrides and Dr Eleni Gentekaki from the University of Nicosia School of Veterinary Medicine. They worked alongside Dr Anastasios D. Tsaousis from the University of Kent, Dr Maria Liapi from Cyprus Veterinary Services, and Professor Stavros Malas from the Cyprus Institute. This research marks the first nationwide overview of Cryptosporidium species in dairy cattle across Cyprus.

The study, published in the journal Current Research in Parasitology and Vector-Borne Diseases, analyzed 517 faecal samples from dairy cattle across 18 farms in all five districts of Cyprus. This was done using the dairy cattle biobank established by the research team in 2024. The detection of Cryptosporidium in nearly 40% of calves included the identification of six previously unreported subtypes and a new subtype family on the island, offering crucial data on the parasite’s presence and variety.

Given Cryptosporidium’s ability to infect both animals and humans, the study’s results have significant public health implications. In humans, infection can result in watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and nausea, with heightened risks for young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.

Dr Mavrides stated that the study advances understanding of the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of Cryptosporidium across Cyprus, which is vital for informing targeted husbandry practices and promoting healthy livestock populations within a One Health framework.

Dr Gentekaki emphasized the importance of systematic surveillance and the role of resources like the national cattle biobank in supporting long-term research in veterinary medicine and public health.

The researchers stress the need for good husbandry practices, regular monitoring, and awareness of biosecurity measures to mitigate transmission risks to humans, animals, and the environment, thereby supporting sustainable dairy production in Cyprus.
