The stories of women who work but at the same time perform the unpaid, invisible work of caring for their family and household, contribute to raising awareness in the society and highlight the importance of the role of women in all areas of life, said Commissioner for Gender Equality Josie Christodoulou, addressing a Seminar on “Women in History and its Teaching”, held on Saturday at the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute.

She reiterated the importance that the government attaches to the horizontal implementation of gender policies and referred to the actions of her Office, in close cooperation with all Ministries and Deputy Ministries, in order to give space and voice to women.

The Commissioner underlined that the space and voice that women need is, unfortunately, not something given or self-evident and for this reason stories of women, protagonists of everyday life, who are called to fulfill multiple and complex roles are significant and need to be told.

She also underlined the support of her Office in the eff
ort of the Education Ministry to strengthen the teaching of Cypriot history in relation to the role that women played in our country.

The Commissoner also said that deconstructing stereotypes through gender policies and encouraging critical thinking is important.
