Commissioner Photiou visits Turkish occupied village of Kormakitis, oversees projects worth €1.6 mln

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou visited the occupied village of Kormakitis on Monday where he oversaw projects under construction worth 1.6 mln euros. Photiou met with the enclaved of the village as well as people who decided to resettle there.

Projects are under construction at the elementary school and the stadium and Photiou, who was accompanied by the representative of the Maronites at the Cyprus Parliament Yiannakis Mousa, expressed his satisfaction over the course of works. The government has funded the stadium with 450,000 euros while the school which is expected to operate in 2023-2024 secured funding from the EU of 1.2 mln euros.

Photiou said that the priority for the government is for the enclaved to remain at their homes and wished for Cyprus to be reunited the soonest in conditions of security, stability and prosperity.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Turkey forcibly expelled about 180,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes. Another 20,000 Greek Cypriots, who had remained in the occupied areas, were also forced to eventually abandon their homes and seek refuge in the government controlled areas. Today, few enclaved Greek Cypriots and Maronites remain in the Turkish occupied areas.
