Limassol: Two human lives and 125 square kilometers of land were consumed by a devastating blaze in mountainous Limassol, marking the largest fire in the island’s modern history. The fire, which erupted on Wednesday, has left a trail of incalculable material and psychological damage, affecting 15 communities in the Limassol district.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the fire began near Malia under suspicious circumstances, as noted by community leader Marilena Athini. Athini expressed frustration over the delayed response of firefighting forces, suggesting that timely intervention could have prevented the extensive damage. The community leader recounted her efforts to evacuate residents as the fire rapidly spread, aided by Michalis Mouskalis, Head of the Civil Defence Rescue Department.
Athini described the chaotic evacuation process, including the rescue of 13 children, a pregnant woman, and a newborn from Vasa. She also highlighted the challenges faced in Potamiou, where individuals were trapped in a church. Despite the harrowing experiences, Athini emphasized the need for compensation and support for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
The fire has left a significant impact, with 14 homes completely destroyed in Malia alone. By Friday, authorities recorded damages to 191 homes across affected communities, with 93 entirely destroyed. Additionally, 31 other premises and 120 vehicles sustained damage. Residents like Chris Havariyoun have expressed their grievances over the response to the fire and the lack of support in protecting their properties.
Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, with government organizations and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus working to reinstate essential services. Meanwhile, firefighting forces continue to combat flare-ups, as seen in Omodos near the “Linos” winery. The owner, George Linos, shared his experience of battling the blaze and the devastating effect on the wine villages’ production.
The fire’s aftermath has also revealed the resilience and solidarity of the community, with volunteers and citizens coming together to provide aid and support to those affected. Despite the tragedy, the spirit of unity remains strong as Limassol begins its journey of recovery.
