Chief Scientist Explores Bilateral Science Cooperation with US National Science Foundation.

Nicosia: Cyprus’ Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology, Demetris Skourides, engaged in discussions with the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) to bolster bilateral cooperation in the domains of science, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This dialogue took place during Skourides’ visit to the United States from November 18 to 22.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Skourides, who also chairs the Research and Innovation Foundation, aimed to foster collaboration in these areas. He held a virtual meeting with senior NSF officials in Virginia. This meeting, hosted by Dr. Karen Marrongelle, Chief Science Officer of the NSF, along with Dr. Jessica Robin, Deputy Office Head of the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE), and Nahla Hilmi, Science Diplomacy Analyst, followed a Strategic Dialogue between the governments of Cyprus and the United States held in Nicosia on October 23, 2024.

The discussions emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation and explored ad
opting best practices in Cyprus. One focus was the NSF’s ‘I-Corps’ program, which facilitates the transition of scientific innovation from the laboratory to the marketplace. The press release from Skourides’ office highlighted his presentation of Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem and the government’s incentives in this sphere. Dr. Marrongelle shared insights on the US research and innovation strategic themes and priorities.

Both parties agreed to continue exchanging information and deepening collaboration in science, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The Office of the Chief Scientist expressed gratitude to the U.S. Embassy in Cyprus for its support in this initiative.
