Brussels: A chance for real peace in Ukraine is difficult, but not impossible, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola stated following Monday’s notable meetings in Washington regarding the ongoing conflict. She emphasized the European Union’s unwavering support for Kiev in her remarks.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Metsola highlighted that the recent “important meeting in Washington could be the game changer for a path to peace in Ukraine that we have all wanted and worked for,” as she expressed in a post on X. The discussions followed the Alaska Summit involving the US and Russia, with participation from the US President, Ukraine’s President, and European Union leaders, which Metsola believes makes a chance for real peace realistic, albeit challenging.
Metsola reiterated that the EU’s foundation is as a peace project, and it remains committed to striving for peace. She stressed that the cost of war is well known and that enduring peace must be grounded in strong security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future conflicts from arising.
She further noted that peace must be founded on the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” underscoring the importance of Ukraine’s strength and support in deterring adversarial forces. Metsola concluded by affirming Europe’s consistent stance and its continuing commitment to supporting Ukraine in its pursuit of peace.
