Trkiye rescues over 40 irregular migrants pushed back by Greece

The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 43 irregular migrants Wednesday in the Aegean Sea who were illegally pushed back into Turkish territorial waters by Greek authorities. Teams were dispatched off the coast of Dikili in Izmir province after learning of the 13 irregular migrants in a rubber boat, the Coast Guard Command said on its website. Also, 31 irregular migrants pushed back into Turkish waters by the Greek Coast Guard were rescued from a rubber boat off Bodrum district in Mugla, the Coast Guard Command said in a separate statement. The irregular migrants were brought to shore and taken to the provincial migration management directorate, it added. Human rights groups and media outlets have frequently reported on illegal pushbacks and other human rights breaches by Greek authorities. Survivors of a migrant boat sinking last month where 300 – 600 migrants are feared drowned, have blamed the deadly incident on a Greek Coast Guard boat trying to tow the migrant craft into Italian territorial waters. Trkiye and global rights groups have repeatedly condemned Greece’s illegal practice of pushing back asylum seekers and said it violates humanitarian values and international law by endangering the lives of vulnerable migrants, including women and children.

Canadian federal government suspends advertising on Facebook, Instagram, says heritage minister

Canada’s federal government suspended all advertising on Facebook and Instagram as its battle regarding the Online News Act continues with Google and Meta, the country’s Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said Wednesday. “Facebook has decided to be unreasonable, irresponsible and started blocking news,” Rodriguez said at a news conference, according to media reports. “This is why today we are announcing the government of Canada will be suspending advertising on Facebook and Instagram. Google, on the other hand, has been open to finding a solution,” he said. The Online News Act, C-18, was passed into law June 22 by the federal government. It mandates that companies such as Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), and their respective platforms like Instagram, pay news organizations for each user accessing web stories through their product links. The bill aims to support news outlets financially as advertising has largely shifted to digital platforms, significantly affecting their revenue. Tech companies should consider C-18 as an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to democracy by supporting free and unbiased press and actively combating misinformation, rather than perceiving it as a hindrance to their profitability, Canadian MP Martin Champoux said at the news conference. The law is necessary to preserve democracy in Canada, he added. The Liberal Party of Canada and the NDP have confirmed they will continue to advertise on Meta. Google and Meta did comment on this issue.

UN urges Taliban to halt edit on closing beauty salons

The UN urged the Taliban on Tuesday, to halt their latest edict on closing beauty salons. ”This new restriction on women’s rights will impact negatively on the economy and contradicts stated support for women’s entrepreneurship,” said the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told Anadolu that the world’s body has repeatedly encouraged Afghanistan authorities to avoid ”discriminatory policies.” Haq said the UN mission remains engaged with the Taliban to seek a reversal of the edict. The Taliban has given one month to close beauty salons as it extends its repressive rule regarding women. Taliban rulers have mounted a sustained attack on human rights despite their commitments to protect human and women’s rights. The leaders banned Afghan women from working with NGOs last April. The Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan on Aug. 15, 2021, followed by the disruption of international financial assistance, has left the worn-torn country in economic, humanitarian and human rights crises. Women and girls have been deprived of rights, including education, and disappeared from public life under the Taliban. Thousands of women have since lost their jobs or were forced to resign from government institutions and the private sector.

Oppose building barriers, de-coupling: China’s Xi tells SCO

China’s President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to oppose ‘building barriers and walls’ as well as ‘de-coupling.’

‘China is willing to work with other members to stick to the right direction of economic globalization, object protectionism, unilateral sanctions and overstretching the national security concept,’ Xi told the 23rd summit of SCO Council of Heads of States.

The summit began in virtual mode on Tuesday, with Iran expected to become a full member of the bloc at the session.

Xi said China ‘will strive to make the cake of mutually beneficial cooperation bigger so as to deliver more benefits to people around the world,’ the Chinese daily Global Times reported.

This year India is hosting the summit via videoconference.

Also at this year’s meeting, Kazakhstan will be taking over as chair of the eight-nation group from India.

‘Enhance solidarity, mutual trust’

Xi also called on the SCO members ‘to enhance their solidarity and mutual trust.’

He emphasized ‘safeguarding regional peace and ensuring common security,’ according to a transcript released by the China Daily newspaper.

The Chinese president said the SCO members should ‘strengthen exchanges and mutual learning’ besides ‘fostering closer people-to-people ties.’

Calling for ‘pragmatic SCO cooperation to speed up economic recovery,’ Xi suggested ‘synergizing’ the Belt and Road Initiative with ‘development strategies of various countries.’

He added: ‘The historical trend of peace, development, and win-win cooperation is unstoppable.’

India ‘happy’ Iran joining SCO bloc

Addressing the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was ‘happy Iran is becoming a member of SCO grouping,” adding that the summit would also pave the way for Belarus to become a permanent member of the bloc.

During its term as the SCO chair, India has made sustained efforts to take ‘our multi-faceted cooperation to new heights,’ the premier further said.

The food, fuel and fertilizer crisis is a ‘big challenge” for all the countries in the world ‘surrounded by controversies, tensions and epidemics,’ Modi said, adding: ‘Terrorism may be in any form, in any manifestation, we have to fight together against it.’

‘Pursuit of domestic political agendas’

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his address, called for joint efforts to curb the ‘monster’ of terrorism, including state terrorism, stressing that Islamabad condemns all ‘forms and manifestations’ of it.

‘The Hydra-headed monster of terrorism and extremism – whether committed by individuals, societies or states – must be fought by full vigor and conviction. Any temptation to use it as a cudgel for diplomatic point-scoring must be avoided under all circumstances,’ he said.

Sharif stressed that religious minorities should not be demonized in the ‘pursuit of domestic political agendas,’ a thinly-veiled reference to neighboring India where the nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is often accused of targeting the religious minorities, mainly Muslims, Pakistan’s state television reported.

Last year, the SCO leaders’ summit was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in the region, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday during his meeting at the Presidential Palace with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis. “There are common goals, common aspirations. Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in the region’, he added, noting that the two countries are distinguished by their extroversion in their foreign policy and are countries that provide solutions to problems instead of creating them through their behaviour.

“I consider the decision of the Prime Minister to entrust you with the duties of Foreign Minister a great honour, I am sure you will respond with great success considering your entire career,” the President of the Republic said, addressing Gerapetritis.

For his part, the new Foreign Minister of Greece said that “these are indeed historic moments we are living in. The situation is quite charged regionally and internationally, the challenges are great. We must, in the context of our common understanding of the way in which our interests should be promoted, ensure that the Cyprus problem receives the just and viable solution that we all want.”

“I think this is another historic opportunity to try within the UN and the EU, which seems to be taking a more active role thanks both to your personal efforts and the support of the Prime Minister of Greece. I think that the times will show that it is a great challenge, but also a great opportunity,” the Greek Foreign Minister concluded.
