Carbon Tierra Biennale 2026 to Focus on Environmental Impact of Industrial Activity

Ptolemaida:The second Carbon Tierra Biennale, organized by the kilowArt platform in collaboration with the Contemporary Fine Arts Lab at the Cyprus University of Technology, is scheduled to take place from 23 October to 15 November 2026. The event will unfold across various venues in Ptolemaida, Greece.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this edition, titled 'Breath in the Ashes,' will feature 35 international artists showcasing video art, documentaries, installations, and performances. The Biennale aims to address the environmental and social consequences of extractive activities and the challenges faced by local communities transitioning to a post-lignite era.

The exhibition will delve into themes of environmental impact, public health, labor, collective memory, and the future of regions affected by industrial activities. Ptolemaida, a significant energy hub in Greece, will serve as a focal point, linking its historical experiences of extraction and industrial transformation to similar global narratives.

The main program runs from 23 to 25 October, including film screenings, artistic presentations, and live performances. A conference on 25 October will gather artists, researchers, and the public to discuss the environmental and social legacies of extraction and Ptolemaida's future post-lignite.

Notably, Cypriot visual artist and Professor Klitsa Antoniou will participate, presenting her work 'States of Exception Coordinates of Possibility,' which explores reimagining an abandoned airport near Ptolemaida. The Biennale is curated and directed by George Lazoglou, Artistic Director of the kilowArt platform.

The event is supported by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, with further details available at kilowartplatform.gr and on Instagram at @carbontierrabiennale.
