Canada’s payroll employment rises 0.2% in May


ISTANBUL: Canada’s payroll employment rose 41,000, or 0.2%, in May from the previous month, the country’s statistical agency said Thursday.

This was the fifth consecutive monthly increase, with a cumulative gain of 148,900, or 0.8%, during the January-May period, Statistics Canada said in a statement.

In May, monthly payroll employment gains were recorded in nine out of 20 sectors, led by health care and social assistance with an increase of 13,800, or 0.6%, said the agency.

Job vacancies, meanwhile, were little changed in May at 559,700, following three consecutive monthly declines from January to April that totalled 99,700, it added.

Annually, total job vacancies in May were down by 217,100, or 28%, compared to the same month of last year.

Average weekly earnings, on the other hand, were up 0.8% in May from the previous month, according to Statistics Canada.

Annually they grew 4.2% in May from the same month last year, it added.
