Canada resumes sale of military equipment to Trkiye

TRENTON: Canada resumed arms exports to Trkiye on Monday following a years-long suspension.

‘The presumptive denial policy is no longer in place,’ the government announced in a statement.

‘Export and brokering permit applications destined to Trkiye for all groups on the Export Control List and the Brokering Control List, including Group 2 items (Munitions List), will now be reviewed on a case-by-case basis under Canada’s risk assessment framework, including against the Arms Trade Treaty criteria,’ the Canadian government said.

Canada temporarily suspended the issuance of all new permits for the export of controlled goods and technology to Trkiye on April 16, 2020.

Controlled products, as defined by the Canadian government, include ‘military and strategic goods and technology.’

The resumption of exports came after the Turkish parliament approved Sweden’s entrance to NATO last week.
