Nicosia: Employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 1,311 people (1.7%) in the first quarter of the year, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, total employment in the Broad Public Sector in the 1st quarter of 2025 reached 77,034 persons. The employment within the General Government was 72,072, while Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies employed 4,962 persons.
In the General Government sector, which encompasses the Government, Non-Profit Organisations, and Local Authorities, total employment reached 55,243, 11,248, and 5,581 persons respectively.
The rise in employment figures in the Broad Public Sector by 1,311 persons (1.7%) was observed when compared to the same quarter of 2024. Employment in Central Government saw an increase of 1,026 persons (1.6%), and Local Authorities experienced a significant rise of 1,117 persons (25%). Conversely, employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies decreased by 832 persons (-14.4%).
The changes in employment within Local Authorities and Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies are linked to the establishment of the District Local Government Organisations (DLGO) from July 1, 2024, as well as the reassignment of Sewerage Boards and Water Boards under DLGO’s jurisdiction.
When compared to the 4th quarter of 2024, employment in the Broad Public Sector saw a modest increase of 197 persons (0.3%). Central Government employment rose by 260 persons (0.4%), while Local Authorities experienced a decrease of 59 persons (-1%). Employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies remained unchanged from the 4th quarter of 2024.
