Nicosia: British High Commissioner Designate to the Republic of Cyprus, Michael Tatham, and US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Fisher, emphasized Cyprus’ strategic significance in regional matters at the Economist 20th Annual Cyprus Summit on Thursday. Tatham underscored the UK’s appreciation of Cyprus’ role, while Ambassador Fisher commended Cyprus’ initiatives, particularly the establishment of a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid to Gaza and facilitating the evacuation of foreign nationals from crisis zones.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Tatham, newly appointed to his role, described a productive meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides in London last month, reiterating the UK’s high regard for Cyprus’ regional contributions. He highlighted the UK’s involvement in the Cyprus issue as a guarantor power and a permanent UN Security Council member, stressing a forward-looking approach to the unresolved situation.
Tatham reiterated the UK’s support for UN diplomatic efforts and expressed anticipation f
or forthcoming developments. Regarding UK-EU relations, he confirmed the British Government’s stance that Brexit is a settled reality with no return to EU membership, signaling willingness to enhance dialogue with Brussels on improving the current withdrawal agreement.
Ambassador Fisher noted the positive momentum in Cyprus-US relations, expressing eagerness to continue this trajectory post-January 20, when President-elect Donald Trump takes office. She acknowledged Cyprus’ significant role in the evacuation of citizens from Sudan and ongoing crisis cooperation with the US, highlighting the commitment of President Christodoulides and his administration.
Fisher also mentioned President Christodoulides’ historic meeting with US President Joe Biden, marking the first visit by a Cypriot President to the Oval Office in 28 years. She noted Biden’s gratitude for Cyprus’ contributions to various issues and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the US and Europe in addressing democratic challenges.
Cyprus has endured division since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern region. Numerous UN-led peace negotiations have yet to achieve resolution, with the most recent talks in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in July 2017, ending without agreement.
