Nicosia: Bicommunal organisation of missing persons and victims 63-74 notes in a press release that “we urgently need to overcome the deadlock and reconvene the negotiation process” in face of the upcoming convening the informal conference on Cyprus in New York on July 16 and 17 called by the UN Secretary-General. Also, it expresses concern “to the extent that the standard nationalist rhetoric traditionally prevailing during this period of July each year, might manifest this time.”
According to Cyprus News Agency, the organisation is concerned because the political atmosphere during the period between last conference on Cyprus in March 2025 to date has been negative and progress on the goals set by that conference has been limited.
The organisation stresses the urgency to overcome the deadlock and reconvene the negotiation process, safeguarding whatever has already been agreed on the table until and at the Crans Montana Conference and the Guterres Framework as the most effective way of achieving a negotiated settlement.
It also highlights that an agreement leading to a reunited Cyprus based on a Bi-communal, Bi-zonal Federation with political equality as defined in the relevant UN Resolutions is the most effective way of securing peace on the island and creating conditions of prosperity for its people.
The statement concludes by remembering the victims from all communities of Cyprus and declaring the resolve to stand together and continue to work for tracing the fate of all the Missing and bringing society face to face with the realities of the violence of the past. It calls for unity in action to reunite the country on the basis of a Bi-communal Bi-zonal Federation with political equality.
