Nicosia: The important role played by the Republic of Cyprus in the Council of Europe was highlighted today by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, during his official visit to Cyprus, where he met with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the President welcomed Berset to the Presidential Palace, emphasizing that the Republic of Cyprus places great importance on the Council of Europe and the implementation of decisions by the European Court of Human Rights. The discussions included topics such as the situation of five Greek Cypriots held in Turkish-occupied territories, the Cyprus problem, missing persons, property issues, and broader geopolitical concerns like the illegal invasion of Ukraine, and situations in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Middle East.

Berset noted that he and the President share a complete agreement on the rule of law, democracy, and the protection of human rights. He emphasized these as collective commitments of the Council of Europe and acknowledged the strong role and support of Cyprus within the organization.

Following their meeting, the President and the Secretary General visited Nicosia City Hall and walked along the green line, culminating in an official lunch hosted by the President at the Presidential Palace in honor of Berset.
