Authorities Mobilize to Address Storm-Induced Damage in Limassol and Paphos.

Limassol: Authorities on Sunday said they were working to restore damage caused by storms on Saturday that affected mainly Limassol and Paphos. Torrential rains, strong winds and hail caused a lot of damage in these two districts, while various services were activated to deal with flooded roads and buildings, fallen tree branches and road signs, people trapped in their vehicles, as well as problems at the Paphos General Hospital.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides gave instructions to officials to go to the Paphos General Hospital to make sure all damage caused to the thalassemia ward and the cardiology lab due to flooding on Saturday evening was recorded and that measures are taken so that the affected spaces resume operations the soonest possible. Health Minister, Michalis Damianos, was expected to visit the hospital on Sunday, while on Saturday evening Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, went there where he was briefed about the damage.

The State Health Se
rvices Organisation indicated that the issue stemmed from blocked drainpipes on the hospital’s fourth-floor veranda where construction work was underway. The contracting company responsible for the work was asked to implement corrective measures.

The Fire Service reported responding to 54 incidents in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca, focusing on cars caught in floods, pumping out water from flooded spaces, and removing fallen trees. In Paphos, the Fire Service also rescued individuals trapped in two cars caught in floods, including one person with mobility issues.

In the Paphos district, significant damage was reported in Mouttalos, Kato Paphos, Konia, and Yeroskipou. In Kissonerga, some banana plantations suffered damage due to the strong winds, as reported by authorities.

Power outages were also experienced in Mouttalos, Empa, Chlorakas, and other areas, officials said. In Limassol, power cuts were noted in Ayios Mamas, Ayios Therapon, Ayios Tychonas, Avdimou, Yermasoyia, Kalo Horio, Kilani, Pahna, Pano P
olemidia, Parekklsiia, Potamiou, Silikou, and Trimiklini. The Fire Service responded to calls for the removal of fallen trees and road signs, as well as materials swept away by the strong winds.

The Agriculture Ministry announced plans to assess damage caused to four farms in the Limassol district and provide assistance to the affected farmers. Additionally, the Fire Service received support from Civil Defence and SupportCy volunteers.
