Attacks against UNFICYP are unacceptable Greek Dep Min of Foreign Affairs says Attacks against peacekeeping forces of the UN in Pyla village, by Turkish Cypriots, are unacceptable actions that harm the international law, Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Kotsiras said on Tuesday evening. Kotsiras, who is responsible for Greek diaspora issues, was addressing the opening of the annual World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora on behalf of the Greek government. ‘We strongly and totally condemn,’ the attacks, he said and added that Nicosia and Athens in full coordination are taking due actions on European and international level. Kotsiras underlined the ‘a just and definitive solution of the Cyprus problem, which will restore international order and legitimacy and will be based on the implementation of UNSC resolutions, is a common national goal.’ Members of the Security Council condemned on Monday, August 22, 2023, the incidents in the buffer zone, in the village of Pyla, in Larnaca district, with assaults against UN peacekeepers, reiterating their full support for UNFICYP. ‘Greece and Cyprus stand united in solidarity, respecting the international law,’ he said and spoke of the ‘eternal fraternal ties’ between the people of the two countries, due to common identity. ‘Freedom, preservation of our identity and protection of our values and ideals have always been points of reference for the Greeks,’ Kotsiras noted. He also referred to the pivotal role of the Church, both in Cyprus and abroad. According to the Greek Deputy Minister, the role and potential of the diaspora have led to the implementation of policies that will serve to further highlight its role. Kotsiras noted that the cooperation between diaspora and the two countries has been expanded through trilateral cooperations with countries such as Armenia and Egypt. Concluding, he thanked Cyprus for the assistance offered to Greece, in order to fight the wildfires that have been raging in his country.
