As Putin starts new term, Russian gov’t steps down to make way for successors

ISTANBUL: The Russian government on Tuesday announced its resignation as President Vladimir Putin was sworn in for a fifth presidential term in an inauguration ceremony in the capital Moscow.

The corresponding decree signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was shared by the government on Telegram, which said it resigned its powers to Putin.

‘The procedure for forming a new government begins with the appointment of the Chairman of the Government. A decree on this is signed by the President after approval of the candidacy by the State Duma,’ the statement said.

It added that the new premier will submit proposals to the president on the structure of federal executive bodies no later than a week after his or her appointment.

Putin later signed a decree on the government’s resignation, which said it will continue to perform its duties until a new Cabinet of Ministers is formed.
