Nicosia: Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus expressed on Thursday in a written statement his “deep shock” over “the tragedy that has struck our island as a result of the devastating fires that are still raging.”
According to Cyprus News Agency, “our grief and sorrow are beyond words, both for the loss of human lives and for our fellow citizens who have been injured, but also for those who have lost their homes and possessions and are now facing their own terrible ordeal.”
“At this time, many words are superfluous. We emphasize only the need for a calm response to the situation and the provision of all possible support to our brothers and sisters who, especially at this critical time, are affected by the fiery ravages. The thoughts and prayers of all are with them, embracing them with all the warmth of our love and support,” he noted.
He emphasized that “in these tragic times we are going through, the Church of Cyprus, and I myself personally, stand in solidarity with them and participate wholeheartedly in their unbearable pain.”
He also expressed support to the members of the Fire Service, the Police, the medical and nursing staff, the Civil Defence, and in general all state services and volunteer groups who are fighting this unequal battle.
“We pray that God will rest the souls of our brothers who lost their lives so untimely, and that He will strengthen and comfort their families in their deep mourning and grief. We also pray that God will give strength and courage to our wounded for their speedy recovery. Soon, as the Church of Cyprus, we will examine ways of supporting our fellow human beings who have been affected,” the Archbishop concluded.
