Agriculture Minister Highlights Importance of Cooperation with Jordan

Nicosia: Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, emphasized the significance of collaboration between Cyprus and Jordan, particularly in addressing wildfires and drought, during a meeting with her Jordanian counterpart, Khaled Hanifat.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Panayiotou noted that both countries face similar challenges and possess complementary capabilities, which could contribute to the sustainable development of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The discussion took place during Hanifat’s visit to Cyprus, where he attended the 18th Conference of the Regional Committee for the Middle East of the World Organisation for Animal Health in Larnaca.

Panayiotou expressed gratitude to Jordan for its essential assistance in combating recent wildfires in Cyprus. The meeting also covered discussions on managing water resources, as both nations are impacted by drought. They shared experiences on measures like water recycling systems, desalination, and smart watering systems to address these issues.

Building on a Memorandum of Cooperation from 2018, the talks included enhancing cooperation further. The Jordanian delegation showcased their advanced infrastructure for vaccine production, opening avenues for technological and commercial collaboration, according to the Ministry.

The Ministers agreed to strengthen bilateral ties by establishing a Joint Contact Group for implementing the Memorandum and promoting synergies between businesses from both countries.
