Nicosia: The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus is set to host the 7th DeepTech CY Meetup, an event aimed at bolstering the Deep Tech ecosystem in Cyprus by connecting research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and society. This open event will occur on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, from 19:00 to 21:30, at the outdoor amphitheatre of the university's Faculty of Engineering.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus is home to substantial research activity, skilled scientific talent, and expertise in emerging technologies. However, the challenge remains in translating university and research centre knowledge into practical applications and solutions that contribute to societal and economic value. This transformation requires the right infrastructure, support mechanisms, funding access, and partnerships that allow researchers and graduates to progress from scientific knowledge to practical application. Entrepreneurship and new ventures are vital pathways for achieving broader impact.
The DeepTech CY Meetup aims to unite researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and other key ecosystem stakeholders, fostering dialogue, collaboration, and new connections. A primary focus will be on developing Cyprus's Deep Tech ecosystem and the conditions necessary for its growth. The event will discuss the journey from research ideas to practical applications, addressing intellectual property protection, funding access, industry collaboration, technology transfer, and the creation of sustainable Deep Tech initiatives in Cyprus.
Professor Marina Neophytou, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, will present the Faculty's vision and initiatives for linking research with innovation and entrepreneurship, emphasizing its role in transforming scientific knowledge into impactful technological applications and solutions. The event will also feature a Fireside Chat titled 'Building a Deep Tech Ecosystem in Cyprus.' This discussion will transition from strategic perspectives to practical realities, focusing on what is necessary for a research idea to become an application, technology, or initiative with sustainable growth potential.
The panel will include diverse perspectives from academic research, entrepreneurship, investment, innovation, and technology transfer support, featuring Margarita Chli, Assistant Professor of Robotic Vision at the University of Cyprus and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich; Charis Christofi, Co-Founder and CEO of Orom AI; Maria Markidou Georgiadou, Director of Cyprus Seeds; Anastasia Constantinou, Head of the Innovation Management Sector at the University of Cyprus; and Anixi Antonakoudi, Director of Innovation at The Cyprus Institute.
The event is organized by 33East and Plug and Play Cyprus, with support from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus and Cyprus Seeds, and powered by Cyprus_iT and rpv.global venture fund.
