30,000 Free Digital Identity Cards Released as Cyprus Introduces eIDs

Nicosia: The first batch of 30,000 digital identity cards (eIDs) is now available free of charge to Cypriot citizens, marking the official launch of the new service on Monday, January 27. The initiative, introduced by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, allows citizens to access these eIDs on a first-come, first-served basis. An additional 70,000 eIDs will be offered for a fee of 15 euros each.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Deputy Ministry announced that applications for the 100,000 state-funded eIDs, valid for three years with renewal options, are open to citizens over the age of 18 who hold a valid biometric identity card. Detailed instructions for obtaining and using the eIDs are available on the website www.idme.gov.cy. Additionally, a 24/7 support line has been established at +357 22868500 for any inquiries.

The process for acquiring an eID involves submitting an electronic application through the Approved Electronic Identity Service Provider’s portal, followed by an appointment for physical identification at the Citizen Service Centers (KEP). Applicants are required to bring their biometric IDs and a printed application copy for signing in the presence of a KEP official. The codes issued during the process are crucial for using the eID, and any lost or forgotten codes will necessitate a visit to the KEP office for verification.

The eID serves as a secure online identity, enabling citizens to access public and private information systems and electronically sign documents with the same legal validity as a handwritten signature. It is distinct from the digital citizen identity used for physical identification, which is part of the “Digital Citizen” application, as clarified by the Deputy Ministry.
