Second gold medal for Cyprus with Marios Georgiou in men’s horizontal bar

Marios Georgiou won the gold medal in men’s horizontal bar final on Wednesday at the Mediterranean Games in Oran.

This is the second gold medal for the Cypriot delegation after the first place of Stefanos Nikolaidis a few hours earlier in men’s skeet, as well as the second medal for Marios Georgiou himself after winning the bronze medal in men’s artistic individual all-around final.

As the Cyprus Olympic Committee said in a statement, Georgiou scored 14.300 points in his first attempt and left no room for reaction to his opponents. Marios Georgiou also ranked 7th in men’s pommel horse.

Moreover, it is noted that in his first appearance at the Mediterranean Games Elias Georgiou placed sixth in men’s parallel bars with 14.300 points, just 200 points less than the second place.

Cypriot MPs to take part in OSCE PA annual summit in Birmingham

A delegation of Cypriot members of the House of Representatives is travelling to the UK to take part at the Organisation for the Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) annual session in Birmingham.

The five-day meeting, at the International Convention Centre, will take place from 2-6 July, providing an opportunity for around 700 members of the assembly and their guests to discuss the critical security issues facing Europe. It will be the first in person session of the annual assembly since 2019.

Irene Charalambides, who chairs the delegation, will travel with MPs Kyriakos Hadjiyianni and Christos Senekis to Birmingham.

Charalambides is also Vice-President of the OSCE PA and Special Representative on Fighting Corruption.

Many resolutions will be tabled for approval, including Charalambides’ resolution on Code of Conduct for Members of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

The largest event on the Assembly’s calendar, the 2022 Annual Session comes at a time of heightened challenges facing the OSCE region due to the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine.

Debates are expected to focus on the war and its related political, security and humanitarian impacts, but will also cover other important issues, including economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, migration and displacement, humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, human trafficking in a globalised economy, cybersecurity and cybercrime, nuclear security and the prohibition of nuclear weapons, pollution and climate change, independence of civil society and freedom of the media and combating disinformation, the conference website said.

Land Registry publishes new General Evaluation 1,660,048 properties, worth €186 billion, 25,102 more properties than in 2018

The New General Valuation of 1,660,048 properties, throughout the government-controlled areas of the Republic, based on 1.1.2021 prices, was published on Thursday by the Department of Lands and Surveys.

The department’s director, Ellikos Elia, told CNA that the number of properties is up by 25,102 or 1.5% compared to the 2018 General Evaluation of 1,634,946 and are valued at 186 billion euros.

He said the small increase in the value of properties is due to the increased cost of construction material, adding there is no substantial fluctuation in the value of the land from the previous General Estimate.

According to the new Estimate, the biggest increases concerned apartments and houses in Limassol district.

He said the publication of the General Valuation is a pillar of transparency of the real estate market, provides an indication of the market value and performance of real estate and directs potential sellers and buyers of real estate, as well as investors in this important sector of the economy”.

At the same time, it allows the public to check their properties’ characteristics which are used to generally estimate the value of their property.

8th Graduation Ceremony of University of Nicosia Medical School

The 8th Graduation Ceremony of the University of Nicosia Medical School took place at the UNIC Open Amphitheatre on Tuesday 28 June 2022. Among the invited guests was the Minister of Health Mr Michalis Hajdipantela and representatives of medical councils, societies and affiliated hospitals.

In his welcome speech Dean Professor Andreas Charalambous congratulated the graduating class and proudly mentioned the 99.8% employment rate of the School’s graduates. He showcased the School’s research activity and added that the Medical School is the steam engine of the University in regards to research and publications contributing significantly to the international rankings of the University.

In his message, Rector Professor Philippos Pouyioutas referred to the European University Association Vision 2030, “Universities without Walls” and urged the graduates to play their part in transforming the world into a better, greener, digital, and more inclusive and peaceful place which no longer tolerates inequality and injustice and which strives to achieve zero hunger and to promote good health and well-being for all.

Three personalities from Cyprus were awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in acknowledgment of their contribution to the health sector of Cyprus and to medicine: Lakis Anastassiades for the recording of the history of medicine in Cyprus and for his contribution to medicine, Anna Achilleoudi for her dedication to cancer care, as founder and president of the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF), and for her contribution to medicine, former Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou for his vision, determination and efforts to implement the General Healthcare System in Cyprus and for his efforts to manage and control the pandemic.

The Panos Englezos Prize was awarded to Alan R. Cohen, Emeritus Professor at Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. The Prize was established by the Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) and is jointly awarded by the Medical School and TIF on a biennial basis. The award is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the public health sector or who has created scientific or medical advancement in the prevention, management and improvement in the quality of life of patients with haemoglobin disorders.

The ceremony ended with the new doctors publicly taking the Hippocratic Oath.

The graduating students had completed one of the following programmes of study: MD (Doctor of Medicine), MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Master of Science in Family Medicine, Master of Science in Health Services Administration, and Master of Public Health.
