11,000 Vehicles Await Airbag Replacement, Cyprus Official Reveals

Nicosia: A total of 11,000 vehicles are pending for airbag replacement according to figures until the end of 2025, Road Transport Department Officer Constantinos Kouppis told the Cyprus News Agency. In 2025, there was a total of 100,500 vehicles with faulty airbags, he said.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kouppis clarified that the vehicles that are in operation out of the 11,000 are 7,000. The total number that was announced in February 2025 stood at 81,000. Kouppis said that the implementation of replacements is over 90%, pointing out that this is an ongoing process as more vehicles are constantly being added for recalls.

He noted that for these 7,000 vehicles, the eight-month deadline has expired based on the decree issued by the Transport Ministry and they are restricted from being driven. Kouppis further said that several owners cannot be located, either by phone or by their address, according to a briefing they had from the car companies.

He expressed hope that they will come forward as they will not be able to renew their license. He further said that in addition to the 81,000 vehicles for recall announced last February, almost 19,500 vehicles for airbag recall have been added within the past year, of which the airbag replacement for 4,000 vehicles is still pending.
