Zelenskyy Optimistic for Ukraine War Resolution During Cyprus EU Presidency

Nicosia: It is possible for the war in Ukraine to end during Cyprus' Presidency of the Council of the EU, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in Nicosia during the Opening Ceremony for the assumption of the Presidency for the first semester of 2026.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine deserves, like Cyprus, to be an equal part of the EU and expressed hope that Cyprus' Presidency will be productive in advancing the country along this path. He also highlighted the need for enhanced sanctions against Russia, noting that a new package is being prepared to target Russia's shadow fleet.

During his speech, Zelenskyy extended his gratitude to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, expressing his pleasure to be in Nicosia as Cyprus begins its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He underscored the high expectations from this Presidency, noting its significance for both Cyprus and Ukraine.

Zelenskyy remarked that Cyprus, although smaller in size, holds an equal voice in European institutions, reflecting the core values of Europe where every nation matters. He reiterated that Ukraine also deserves to be an equal part of the European community and expressed optimism that Cyprus' Presidency will facilitate this progress.

In reference to the bilateral talks held with President Christodoulides, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of Ukraine being a priority for the Cyprus Presidency. He expressed gratitude for the ambition to open negotiation clusters simultaneously for Ukraine and Moldova during the Cyprus Presidency.

Zelenskyy also expressed hope for the initiation of the implementation of the £90 billion support package for Ukraine during Cyprus' Presidency, emphasizing the importance of these funds in strengthening Ukraine's and Europe's resilience. He called for a practical mechanism to ensure these funds effectively support Ukraine without creating new challenges.

As Cyprus assumes its presidency, Zelenskyy noted that peace negotiations have intensified, with active participation from Ukraine, European partners, the United States, and members of the Coalition of the Willing. He expressed hope that sufficient pressure on the aggressor could lead to the war's end during Cyprus' Presidency, stressing the EU's critical role in maintaining pressure through sanctions and support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy underscored the importance of continued European support for Ukraine, both in defense and diplomacy, and acknowledged Cyprus' recent visit to Ukraine and the unity demonstrated at the start of the Cyprus Presidency.

Regarding the SAFE programme, Zelenskyy emphasized its potential to strengthen Europe, attributing its success partly to Cyprus' Presidency. He expressed hope for productive collaboration within the SAFE programme alongside Cyprus and other EU countries.

Finally, Zelenskyy wished Cyprus a successful Presidency, expressing hope for a stronger Europe and a safer future. He concluded by expressing his belief in Ukraine's potential EU membership as a crucial guarantee of peace and security for Europe.
