Zelensky and Christodoulides Meet in Kyiv to Discuss Cyprus’ Upcoming EU Presidency

Kyiv: President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, welcomed the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in Kyiv on Thursday morning. Christodoulides is on a working visit to the Ukrainian capital as part of preparations for Cyprus’ upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. The visit includes a private meeting between the two leaders, followed by expanded discussions between delegations from both countries.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, who is part of the Cypriot delegation, emphasized Cyprus’ solidarity with the Ukrainian people in a message on X. He stated that the visit is a symbolic gesture of Cyprus’ commitment to the principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. Letymbiotis highlighted the shared experiences of Cyprus and Ukraine regarding invasion and occupation, noting that Cyprus’ support for Ukraine is grounded in its own history and struggle for justice.

Letymbiotis further expressed Cyprus’ support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just and sustainable peace, consistent with International Law and the UN Charter. He emphasized the importance of coordination with European and international partners.

He also mentioned that during Cyprus’ EU Council presidency in 2026, enlargement will be a key priority, with Ukraine’s integration into the European community being a significant focus. Cyprus intends to support Ukraine’s progress towards joining the European family with consistency.
