Yellow Weather Warning for Rain and Storms Issued in Cyprus

Nicosia: The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus issued a yellow warning on Tuesday for rain and storms expected to impact the island starting from Tuesday afternoon. The advisory will be in effect from 18:00 on Tuesday until 08:00 on Wednesday, local time.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the weather disturbance will initially affect the western part of Cyprus before spreading to the rest of the island. The Department of Meteorology noted the potential for hail during storms and fluctuating wind strengths. Rainfall intensity is anticipated to vary locally between 35 to 55 millimeters per hour.

Meteorological Officer Andreas Chrysanthou elaborated on the weather conditions, stating that two disturbances are predicted, with the first occurring today and the second from Sunday onwards. During this period, Cyprus will experience unstable conditions with isolated showers and possibly storms. Chrysanthou also mentioned the likelihood of hail and even snow or sleet in the higher mountainous regions.

The current disturbance is expected to move away by Wednesday, though isolated rain and storms may persist until Saturday. Temperatures are forecasted to experience a slight drop of 1-2°C on Wednesday but will return to seasonal norms by Thursday and Friday, ranging from 17-18°C in coastal areas, 15-16°C inland, and 8-10°C in the higher mountains. A new weather disturbance is anticipated from Sunday, bringing local rains and isolated storms.

Chrysanthou also highlighted the presence of intermittent dust concentrations in the atmosphere, which are currently three times above the permissible level in some areas. The dust originates from disturbances over northern Africa, transporting particles eastward. This pattern is expected to continue in the coming days, affecting air quality across Cyprus.
