Women from Cyprus Unite Through Crochet Art for Peace Initiative

Nicosia: For six months, women of different ethnicities from various regions within the government-controlled areas of Cyprus, along with a group of Turkish Cypriot women, collaborated on an inspiring project aimed at fostering peace and unity. Their shared mission was to create, exchange experiences, and build lines of communication through the traditional art of 'smili-crochet', resulting in the creation of thousands of handmade flowers.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the project culminated in the installation titled 'A Thousand Hands, a Thousand Stories: Common Ground', showcasing the power of collective creation as a medium for dialogue and human connection. This artistic endeavor draws inspiration from the rich archaeology and cultural heritage of Cyprus, underscoring the essential role of cooperation and mutual understanding among its people.

The initiative received substantial support from the Paphos Educational Centers, guided by Mary Savva, and included participation from the Geroskipou Elderly Center and the Paphos Municipality Elderly Center. Savva emphasized that what began as a simple challenge for joint creation transformed into a profound collective experience, fostering connection, trust, and cooperation among the women involved.

Each crochet flower created for the installation carries the unique imprint of the hands that crafted it, symbolizing a larger collective project that represents unity and coexistence. Savva expressed her gratitude to all the women who embarked on this creative journey and acknowledged those who supported and contributed to the realization of the initiative, including coordinators and volunteers.

The installation is part of the Peace2Peace Open Air Crochet Installations project, supported and funded by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus and the Deputy Ministry of Culture, as part of the European Days of Archaeology 2026. Through this project, 'A Thousand Hands, a Thousand Stories: A Common Ground' demonstrates the unifying power of art, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to create a shared space for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
