Nicosia: US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Davis, met on Monday with Cyprus’ President, Nikos Christodoulides, noting the broad agenda of bilateral issues and saying there is strong attention on the prospects for negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Davis referred to the cooperation between the two countries, pointing out the military ties and the broader bilateral relationship. “A lot is going on in terms of our military cooperation, in terms of growing our bilateral relationship, and thinking about the next steps that will come,” she said, adding that she looks forward to a full week of meetings with her Cypriot interlocutors.
Davis expressed her pleasure in returning to Cyprus, mentioning her role in covering the US Embassy in Ukraine while leading the mission in Nicosia. “It’s really an honor to have an opportunity to meet with President Christodoulides and to talk about the very robust agenda of issues in front of us. Our work continues. We have an incredible team at the American Embassy that has been advancing our relationship,” she stated.
Asked about discussions on the Cyprus issue following meetings in New York, Davis highlighted the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as a platform for leaders to engage in comprehensive talks. “One of the great things about the United Nations General Assembly Week is the opportunity to get a lot of leaders in one place at one time to really engage in a wide-ranging discussion. I think there’s a lot of attention on what is possible in Cyprus and what the next steps might be in terms of negotiations. So we’re going to keep talking about that. We’re going to keep working very closely,” she noted.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended inconclusively.
Aiming to restart negotiations on the long-standing Cyprus issue, an informal meeting in a broader format was held in New York on July 16-17, 2025, following an initial round in Geneva last March. The Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underlined the continued steadfast commitment of the United Nations to a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus issue for the benefit of all Cypriots, following last Saturday’s trilateral meeting in New York with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
