US Ambassador Reaffirms Commitment to Cyprus Peace Efforts

Nicosia:The United States remains dedicated to fostering peace in Cyprus, aligning with United Nations Security Council resolutions, as emphasized by US Ambassador in Nicosia, John Breslow.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Breslow recently met with the United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin. The meeting was highlighted in a social media post by the US Embassy in Nicosia, where Breslow expressed appreciation for Holguin's insights on advancing peace efforts.

The US Ambassador reiterated the country's commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus, ensuring political equality for all Cypriots, in accordance with UNSC resolutions. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern region. Despite numerous UN-led peace negotiations, no conclusive agreement has been reached, largely due to Turkish resistance. The last significant discussions, held in Crans-Montana in July 2017, also ended without resolution.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another comprehensive meeting, once adequate preparations are completed, though no specific timeline has been provided. Guterres has secured the agreement of both Cypriot sides and the guarantor powers for these forthcoming talks. María Angela Holguín is responsible for engaging with involved parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
