University of Cyprus Secures Spot Among Top 401-500 in Global Rankings

Nicosia: The University of Cyprus (UCY) has once again secured its place among the top 401-500 universities worldwide, as revealed by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2026. This announcement highlights UCY’s continued presence on the global stage as a leading educational institution.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the rankings evaluated 2,191 institutions around the globe, underscoring UCY’s strong international presence and reaffirming its status among the world’s leading universities. Moreover, UCY has been recognized as the top-ranked university in Cyprus, surpassing three other Cypriot universities in the ranking. Since 2016, UCY has consistently appeared in the THE WUR, maintaining its position among globally distinguished universities.

The evaluation criteria for the THE WUR are based on five pillars: Teaching (29.5%), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), International Outlook (7.5%), and Industry (4%). The University of Cyprus excelled notably in Research Quality and International Outlook. With a score of 69.2 in Research Quality, UCY significantly surpassed the median score of 53.0, nearing the 75th percentile of 72.4. The university’s scores in Research Strength (82.5) and Research Excellence (80.4) indicate the substantial impact of its research activities. Additionally, UCY achieved a score of 74.1 in International Outlook, showcasing its strong global collaborations and internationalization efforts.

Professor Tasos Christofides, the Rector of the University of Cyprus, highlighted that while rankings are not the sole measure of quality in higher education, they offer valuable insights into the international context in which universities operate. He emphasized that the university’s impact and contribution to society, particularly as Cyprus’s first public university, extend beyond numerical rankings. Professor Christofides underscored UCY’s commitment to high-quality teaching, impactful research, and active societal engagement. The university’s consistent global recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of its academic community, reflecting its dedication to excellence in teaching, research, international collaboration, and strong industry ties.
