Nicosia:The University of Cyprus successfully hosted the 2026 Workshop on Distributed Computing, Optimization and Learning (WDCL 2026) from October 14 to 16 at its Nicosia campus. The event gathered international researchers, early-career scientists, and industry representatives, including ABB Corporate Research from Sweden and Sig.Network, to discuss scientific advancements and foster new connections.
According to Cyprus News Agency, WDCL 2026 was co-organized by Prof. Themistoklis Charalambous from the University of Cyprus, alongside Prof. Derya Malak and Prof. Petros Elia from EURECOM, France. The workshop received support from the University of Cyprus and the European Research Council (ERC) projects MINERVA and SENSIBILITÉ, focusing on cooperative autonomous systems and distributed control.
The workshop addressed key challenges in enabling devices and intelligent systems to cooperate and make decisions autonomously. Topics covered included distributed optimization, federated machine learning, privacy in computation, and the theoretical foundations of learning. The event featured plenary presentations, invited talks, and poster sessions emphasizing computation, communication, and control.
WDCL 2026 also highlighted the importance of academia-industry collaboration. The involvement of companies like ABB and Sig.Network provided valuable insights into how academic research can drive industrial innovation and vice versa. This interaction facilitated opportunities for joint research and technology validation.
The workshop reinforced international scientific collaboration, encouraging dialogue among researchers, young scientists, and industry professionals. By hosting the event, the University of Cyprus demonstrated its commitment to research excellence and international engagement in distributed systems and intelligent networks. The successful completion of WDCL 2026 is expected to inspire further research in the field.
