University of Cyprus Earns Athena SWAN Bronze Award for Gender Equality Initiatives

Nicosia: The University of Cyprus has been awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze award following a successful evaluation by the internationally recognized organization Advance HE, as part of the Athena SWAN pilot program for Cyprus. This program, implemented during the 2023-2026 period and initiated and funded by Cyprus's Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA), involved various Cypriot universities. The award highlights the successful completion of adapting the international evaluation framework to the Cypriot academic environment, recognizing the development and implementation of policies and practices that promote an equitable and inclusive work and learning environment.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality at the University of Cyprus played a key role in coordinating and completing the process. This was done in collaboration with the University's Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity (DEI) Office and other relevant services. The data collection and analysis process, along with the preparation of the application, were managed by the University's dedicated Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team (SAT). The team contributed significantly to the formulation of evidence-based policies and the development of an ambitious yet realistic Action Plan aimed at enhancing gender equality, which is set to be implemented during 2026-2030.

The support from the senior leadership of the University of Cyprus was crucial, contributing to the progress and successful completion of the project. This showcases the University's commitment to equality and inclusion principles. The achievement represents collective work and collaboration among various academic and administrative units of the University. The Athena SWAN Bronze award is a notable accomplishment for the University of Cyprus and serves as a starting point for the continued implementation of the Action Plan and the integration of practices fostering a more equitable and inclusive university environment.

The Athena SWAN Bronze Award, valid until the end of April 2030, confirms the University of Cyprus's progress in improving its policies and practices relating to equality and inclusion. The University remains committed to creating a modern, fair, and supportive academic environment for all members of its community.
