UNFICYP: Situation Calm in Avlona Following Incident in the Buffer Zone

Unficyp: UNFICYP has confirmed a new incident in the Avlona area of the UN buffer zone, with the situation currently remaining calm.

According to Cyprus News Agency, in response to a CNA query, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique said that UN peacekeepers were dispatched to the area to investigate. "The situation remains calm and UN peacekeepers are engaging with both sides to prevent further tensions," he said.

Media reports earlier stated that on Monday morning Turkish Cypriot tractors entered the Avlona buffer zone and proceeded to cultivate a plot of land belonging to a Greek Cypriot owner. The land in question is located within the area of responsibility of the United Nations.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 illegal Turkish invasion. Numerous peace talks under UN aegis with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results. The latest round of talks took place in the summer of 2017 in the Swiss resort of Crans Montana.
