Nicosia: Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam remains the Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and continues to carry out his duties, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique said on Thursday, responding to a media report concerning his status.

According to Cyprus News Agency, UNFICYP addressed a recent media article that speculated about the status of Lieutenant General Minhazul Alam. The spokesperson, Aleem Siddique, clarified that the general continues to fulfill his role and responsibilities within the mission, dispelling any doubts raised by the circulating report.

The need for clarification arose after Northeast News published a report suggesting that Minhazul Alam's assignment in Cyprus had concluded due to complaints related to his conduct towards officers under his command. The report further claimed that he had returned to Bangladesh earlier this month, causing confusion about his current status.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had appointed Minhazul Alam as the UNFICYP Force Commander in April, succeeding Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri of Mongolia. Minhazul Alam's leadership continues as he remains committed to his duties in Cyprus.
