New york: The UN Security Council vote on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has been rescheduled to take place on Friday, January 30, as per the latest announcement from the UN Secretariat. This procedure was initially set for Thursday, January 29, at 1500 New York time.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Multiple UN-led peace talks have been attempted, but Turkish intransigence has prevented any conclusive results. The most recent negotiations, which took place in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without resolution.
In 2025, the Secretary-General organized two informal meetings on Cyprus, held in March in Geneva and in July in New York. Additionally, a tripartite meeting with Cyprus leaders occurred in late September during the UN General Assembly High Level Week.
Mara Angela Holgun, appointed as the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is responsible for engaging with involved parties. Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, has been designated by the Commission as Special Envoy for Cyprus and is expected to work in collaboration with Holgun to advance the settlement process.
