UN Schedules Cyprus Trilateral Meeting for November 9th

Nicosia:The United Nations has confirmed that a trilateral meeting involving leaders from the two Cypriot communities and the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy will occur on November 9th. The meeting is set for 11 a.m. at the Chief of Mission Residency within the UN Protected Area, hosted by María Ángela Holguín, the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressed optimism about the ongoing process, indicating potential positive developments. He mentioned that María Ángela Holguín informed him via telephone that specific announcements could be forthcoming over the weekend.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Multiple UN-led peace negotiations have yet to resolve the situation, primarily due to Turkish resistance. The last significant talks in 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without agreement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans to convene a broader meeting, pending adequate preparation and agreement from involved parties, including the guarantor powers. María Ángela Holguín is tasked with engaging the parties, while Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, replacing Johannes Hahn.
