UK Supports Cyprus Settlement Efforts After Doughty-Holguin Meeting

London: The UK stands ready to support the Secretary General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Mara Angela Holgun Cu©llar, in her efforts to advance a settlement, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office revealed following a meeting between UK Minister for Europe, Stephen Doughty, and Holgun in London.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Holgun and Doughty discussed recent developments on the Cyprus issue and her preparations for an upcoming meeting about Cyprus, expected to occur in the latter half of July in New York. Holgun’s appointment is viewed as a strategic opportunity, with the UK urging all parties involved to take advantage of it.

The UK Foreign Office expressed its support for the UN Secretary-General’s initiatives to progress the settlement process, including the convening of the parties in the 5+1 format for the first time in four years in March. The UK maintains its steadfast backing of UN resolutions advocating a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality in Cyprus.

The Foreign Office reiterates its commitment to a solution driven by Cypriots, for Cypriots, aiming for a stable, prosperous, and united Cyprus. Holgun is scheduled to meet with the EU’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, Johannes Hahn, in Brussels on Wednesday, marking their first encounter.
