Nicosia: As a guarantor power and the penholder on Cyprus matters at the UN Security Council, the UK has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the UN-led process seeking an agreed settlement for Cyprus. UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, David Lammy, stated that the UK will be present at the next informal 5+1 meeting in New York.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Lammy, during his brief visit to Cyprus, highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the UK and Cyprus. He noted ongoing efforts to finalize a General Security Agreement that would enhance information sharing between the two countries. With Cyprus set to hold the EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2026, Lammy expressed eagerness to work with Cyprus to bolster the UK-EU strategic partnership.
In response to inquiries about potential involvement of British Bases in Cyprus during the recent conflict between Iran and Israel, Lammy clarified that the UK, including the Sovereign Base Areas, did not engage in military operations during the escalation.
Lammy also underscored the robustness of UK-Cyprus relations, emphasizing the frequent interactions between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Christodoulides. He pointed out that their meetings, including a historic visit to Nicosia, signify a new level of ambition in the bilateral relationship.
On the topic of the Cyprus EU Council Presidency, Lammy noted that the UK’s reset relationship with the EU is a positive development. He highlighted the new Strategic Partnership signed between the UK and the EU, which underscores a commitment to cooperation.
Regarding the British Bases in Cyprus, Lammy reiterated their contribution to regional security and stability. He confirmed that there was no participation in military operations during the recent Iran-Israel crisis and emphasized ongoing cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus to address joint challenges.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Lammy called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased aid to Gaza. He advocated for a political process to achieve a two-state solution as a path to lasting peace.
On educational ties, Lammy proudly mentioned that over four thousand Cypriots chose to study in the UK in 2023/24. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to maintaining educational links and highlighted efforts to associate with Erasmus+ and establish a youth experience scheme with the EU.
