Nicosia: More than 50% of Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom-over 325 MPs-have received emails from British citizens, primarily of Cypriot origin, emphasizing the Cyprus issue.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Christos Karaolis, President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, noted that the anniversary of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus stresses the need for intensified efforts towards the island’s reunification. Karaolis emphasized the urgency in light of Turkey’s stance on partition and highlighted the importance of this year’s campaign, especially with many newly elected MPs and the United Nations’ renewed negotiation efforts.
The online campaign, accessible via cypriotfederation.org.uk/mp, provides a straightforward method for users to communicate their message in less than 30 seconds. The Federation asserts that this action has significant political impact, delivering a clear message to the British government and Parliament.
Additionally, the Federation’s statement underscores the campaign’s timing amidst heightened international interest in restarting Cyprus negotiations. The UK, as a Guarantor Power for Cyprus, holds a special responsibility for resolving the issue and restoring legality on the island. This initiative is notably significant with the informal summit occurring in New York.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Previous UN-led peace talks have not achieved conclusive results, with the last negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without resolution.
An informal meeting on the Cyprus issue, chaired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is set to begin on Wednesday in New York.
