Istanbul: Turkish Foreign Minister H.E. Hakan Fidan and EU Commissioner for Enlargement H.E. Marta Kos convened in Istanbul to reaffirm Turkey’s EU candidate status and its pivotal role in promoting regional stability and prosperity.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting underscored a mutual commitment to advancing a collaborative agenda across pivotal sectors such as trade, energy, transportation, and digitalization. A significant focus was placed on the EU’s Black Sea strategy and projects connecting Europe with Central Asia.
Both parties welcomed the European Commission’s decision to facilitate multiple-entry visas for Turkish citizens, aiming to enhance mobility and predictability. The Visa Liberalization Dialogue was highlighted as a crucial aspect of their discussions.
Minister Fidan and Commissioner Kos reiterated their dedication to improving the Customs Union’s implementation, emphasizing its reform as essential for a resilient and inclusive economic partnership. The European Investment Bank (EIB) was recognized as a key contributor to regional development, with an intent expressed to bolster cooperation for sustainable projects in Turkey and adjacent regions.
In light of Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, the Minister and Commissioner pledged to intensify collaborative efforts and encourage private sector participation in rebuilding critical infrastructure. The Turkey Investment Platform was also lauded, with both sides expressing commitment to channel investments into strategic sectors to foster sustainability and regional inclusivity.
The meeting also involved discussions on the recent Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul and the Balkan Peace Platform. Minister Fidan briefed Commissioner Kos on the informal Cyprus meetings under the UN Secretary-General’s auspices.
Commissioner Kos stressed that dialogue on rule of law and democratic standards remains integral to Turkey’s EU relationship. Minister Fidan highlighted the need for a credible enlargement policy, ensuring fair treatment of all candidate countries based on merit and objective criteria, reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to the EU accession process.
