Nicosia: Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos, emphasized the significance of US President Donald Trump's reposting of his interview concerning energy matters in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Damianos made these remarks while speaking to reporters at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus headquarters. He was asked about President Trump's decision to share a link to his interview with Breitbart News. Damianos remarked that the repost "means a great deal," highlighting its importance within the 3+1 cooperation framework involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the United States. The collaboration focuses on developing hydrocarbon resources in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), enhancing electricity interconnections, and ensuring regional energy security.
Damianos noted that while there were no formal commitments, they received assurances to continue with their energy programs. This involves not only resource development but also broader energy security objectives. He stressed the importance of shared understanding with regional partners, including Egypt, and the US endorsement, which encourages Cyprus to advance its energy initiatives.
In response to additional questions, Damianos discussed plans for exporting natural gas from the Aphrodite and Cronos fields to Egypt. This proposal, brought forward by the companies developing the fields, promises economic viability. He explained that while specific revenue figures for Cyprus are uncertain, they will depend on production levels and natural gas prices over agreements lasting a decade or more. Damianos assured that the financial returns will be substantial for Cyprus.
