Ankara: Trkiye has criticised a proposal in the European Parliament to allocate funding for a monument intended to slander the Turkish Armed Forces over the Cyprus issue. "The allegations put forward by the Greek-administered Cyprus side distort historical facts and politicise them," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday. According to TRTworld.com, the Turkish foreign ministry expressed concerns over the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, which in its opinion on the EU's 2027 budget, recommended allocating funds for a so-called monument. This monument is reportedly intended to be built by the Greek-administered Cyprus administration with the aim of slandering the Turkish Armed Forces. The statement from the ministry emphasized that the Turkish Armed Forces played a crucial role in preventing the destruction of the Turkish Cypriot people through the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, which brought enduring peace to the island for over half a century. The m inistry further noted that EU institutions, rather than aiding in resolving the Cyprus issue, are straying from impartiality and justice, effectively becoming instruments of Greek-administered Cyprus propaganda, which further undermines trust between the two communities. The ministry also urged EU officials to resist becoming tools of factions that aim to distance Trkiye from the EU with every action taken.
